Credit Card Size in mm, cm and Inches (ISO ID-1)

Updated · RefScale

Quick answer

A standard credit or debit card is 85.60 mm wide and 53.98 mm tall (3.370 × 2.125 inches, or 8.56 × 5.40 cm), with a thickness of 0.76 mm and corners rounded to a 3.18 mm radius. This size is defined by the international standard ISO/IEC 7810 and is called ID-1.

Which cards use this size?

ID-1 is one of the most widely used physical standards in the world, so many cards in your wallet share exactly the same outline:

Business cards are not ID-1: they vary by country (for example 3.5 × 2 in in the US). See objects of known size for other standard sizes.

Using a credit card for scale in a photo

Because every bank card is manufactured to the same size within fractions of a millimeter, a card is one of the best everyday objects for showing scale in a photo — and for measuring from one. If a card spans a known number of pixels, you can convert any other length in the same plane to millimeters.

  1. Place the card flat, right next to the object and on the same surface, so both are the same distance from the camera.
  2. Hide sensitive details. Turn the card over or cover the number — the back works just as well for scale.
  3. Shoot straight on, with the phone parallel to the surface.
  4. Measure the card's long edge (85.60 mm) where possible: the longer the reference, the smaller the relative error.

In RefScale, choose the Credit/Debit Card preset, fit its frame to the card's edges, and draw lines across anything else in the photo to get real dimensions. The full process is in how to measure an object from a photo.

Credit card size in pixels

A physical card has no fixed pixel size — it depends on the print or scan resolution (dots per inch):

Frequently asked questions

Are all credit and debit cards the same size?

Almost all payment cards — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, debit and prepaid cards — use the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 format of 85.60 × 53.98 mm. Metal cards keep the same outline but can be slightly thicker than the standard 0.76 mm.

Is a driver's license the same size as a credit card?

In the United States, the European Union and many other countries, driver's licenses and national ID cards use the same ID-1 format, so they are 85.60 × 53.98 mm too. Passports use the larger ID-3 format (125 × 88 mm).

How big is a credit card in inches?

3.370 × 2.125 inches, about 3⅜ × 2⅛ in, and 0.030 in thick.

How big is a credit card in centimeters?

8.56 × 5.398 cm, usually rounded to 8.6 × 5.4 cm.

What is the aspect ratio of a credit card?

85.60 ÷ 53.98 ≈ 1.586, close to the golden ratio (1.618).

How many pixels is a credit card?

It depends on resolution. At 300 DPI a card is about 1011 × 638 pixels; at 600 DPI about 2022 × 1275 pixels; at 96 DPI (a common screen default) about 324 × 204 pixels.
